University Library “Svetozar Markovic”, Belgrade, Serbia

University Library “Svetozar Markovic” is the largest scientific and research library in the Balkans and the central university library in Serbia. The central activity of the Library is its participation in the development of library and information activity in Serbia, coordination of the network of libraries, assistance in work organization, suggestion of ideas for improving libraries’ activities and permanent professional development of librarians. Today the University Library “Svetozar Markovic” is the parent library for 4 university libraries, 154 higher education libraries and 83 libraries in scientific institutes and institutions located in different parts of the city of Belgrade and various regions in Serbia. University Library “Svetozar Markovic” is the leading library in Serbia regarding digitization and preservation of various types of documents and publications (monographs and periodicals). The Library constantly strives to acquire cutting edge technology and to enhance the skills and expertise of its own staff so as to advance the digitization processes thus making previously inaccessible materials available and more “user friendly” to researchers and wider public. In this regard the Library also organizes training for other institutions passing on the skills and knowledge in the field of digitization, thus spreading awareness of the importance of digitizing and preserving documents and ensuring a broader reach in terms of available open access materials throughout the country. Furthermore, the University Library “Svetozar Markovic” nurtures cooperation with foreign institutions and experts in the field of open science and citizen science in order to keep abreast of the latest developments and trends.
